Job Description

Senior Applied AI Scientist, Translational AI Lab (TRAIL)
Location: South San Francisco, California, USA
Type: Full-time | Regular

About the Role
Roche’s Translational AI Lab (TRAIL), part of the AI Biology & Translation (AIBT) team, applies cutting-edge machine learning and multimodal AI techniques to accelerate drug discovery and translational research. You will design, adapt, and deploy large language and generative models to transform biological and clinical understanding, collaborating closely with computational scientists, biologists, and engineers across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Apply and fine-tune foundation models (LLMs, generative models, multimodal encoders) for biological annotation, knowledge extraction, and biomarker discovery.

  • Integrate model outputs with experimental datasets and clinical biomarkers.

  • Build tools (dashboards, chat interfaces, and notebooks) connecting AI insights with real-world scientific workflows.

  • Benchmark, evaluate, and interpret AI models for translational use.

  • Partner with therapeutic scientists to translate AI findings into actionable research outcomes.

Who You Are

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Computational Biology, or related field.

  • 3–6 years of hands-on AI/ML or computational biology experience.

  • Strong expertise in deep learning, probabilistic modeling, and frameworks like PyTorch, Hugging Face, or JAX.

  • Familiarity with LLM fine-tuning, prompt engineering, or multimodal model evaluation.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate in cross-functional scientific teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to biomedical or multiomic data (RNA-seq, CRISPR, protein interaction networks).

  • Experience with LLM workflows, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or AutoGen.

  • Background in translational research or target discovery.

Compensation: $167,400 – $310,800 (plus bonus & benefits).
