xAI
xAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge.
Job Description
xAI is seeking exceptional engineers and scientists to join its AI Expert Team — the group responsible for training Grok and developing next-generation artificial intelligence systems capable of long-horizon reasoning, planning, and decision-making across high-impact domains such as mathematics, chemistry, biology, material science, and finance.
As a Member of Technical Staff, you’ll help design and implement new reinforcement-learning algorithms, data pipelines, and evaluation systems that push the boundaries of what AI can accomplish. You’ll collaborate with top researchers and engineers to create intelligent systems that reason like experts, applying insights from scientific and technical domains to real-world problems.
Your daily work will include building and maintaining robust evaluation frameworks for AI models, curating and generating training data, and developing the infrastructure that supports large-scale LLM training and fine-tuning. You’ll be expected to innovate, experiment, and share results that directly improve xAI’s core products and enterprise applications.
You will:
-
Innovate next-generation reinforcement-learning algorithms to unlock advanced reasoning and scientific capabilities.
-
Build data pipelines, evaluation tools, and training recipes for LLMs.
-
Collaborate with domain experts in physics, finance, chemistry, and other fields.
-
Conduct research and translate findings into practical applications.
-
Contribute to Grok’s development and enhance its understanding of complex tasks.
Required Skills and Experience:
-
Strong software-engineering skills and a proven ability to deliver in high-impact environments.
-
Experience in data generation, annotation, and LLM training workflows.
-
Familiarity with Python and deep-learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, etc.).
-
Understanding of reinforcement learning and model evaluation techniques.
-
Excellent communication skills and the ability to present technical concepts clearly.
-
Research experience in non-CS fields (math, physics, finance, chemistry) is a plus.
Work Environment:
This position is based in Palo Alto, CA. The team typically works onsite five days per week, with flexibility for occasional remote days. Candidates should either reside near Palo Alto or be open to relocation.
Compensation and Benefits:
Annual base salary range: $180,000 – $440,000 USD depending on experience and location. xAI also offers equity options and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, vision, and dental coverage, 401(k), short & long-term disability insurance, life insurance, and various other perks and discounts.
xAI is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity, curiosity, and engineering excellence.
