Job Description
Anthropic is seeking a Founding Design Engineer for AI Capability Development to join a small, interdisciplinary team focused on how artificial intelligence enhances human capability. This role blends research, product development, and interaction design, with significant creative freedom to define innovative interaction paradigms rather than optimizing existing ones. You will prototype and ship production-quality features that help users develop real skill with AI, using Claude as a capability-building partner and measuring success through capability growth rather than engagement metrics. You’ll build end-to-end prototypes spanning front-end motion and interaction polish to back-end systems, establish technical direction and design patterns, and influence product strategy by working closely with Product, Design, and Research teams. The role involves translating research insights into shipped products, shaping team strategy and roadmap, documenting work through clear writing and presentations that influence thinking across the organization, and building relationships that help drive Anthropic’s broader product vision. Candidates should have strong full-stack engineering skills with design sensibility, at least six years of experience shipping web products, expertise in TypeScript/JavaScript, React, CSS, and solid backend experience with Python and API design. A strong portfolio demonstrating interaction design and high-quality implementations is expected. You should be comfortable driving features independently from prototype to production and have a deep perspective on how technology should enhance human capabilities rather than diminish them. Strategic leadership and prioritization skills, a research mindset paired with product execution ability, and the capacity to build strong cross-functional partnerships are key to success.

Role expectations:
You will ship AI capability-related product features, architect and prototype interaction models, and guide technical direction for the AI Capability Development team. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to influence how skill development principles shape Anthropic’s broader product strategy.
Requirements:
At least 6+ years building and shipping web products with deep expertise across the stack; strong front-end craft with TypeScript/JavaScript, React, and CSS; solid back-end and data pipeline experience (Python, API design); a portfolio of innovative interaction designs; and a track record of independently driving features from prototype to production.
Strong candidates may also have experience in developer tools, creative tools, learning platforms, or products where user skill development matters; background in learning sciences or cognitive science; experience with experimentation frameworks; published writing or talks on human-AI interaction; or experience building AI-native products.
This role is hands-on and embedded in a research team with no initial people-management responsibilities.
