AI Research Engineer – Duolingo

Job Location: Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Our mission at Duolingo is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. As an AI Research Engineer on the Duolingo English Test security team, you will develop AI systems that detect fraudulent testing behavior using state-of-the-art approaches such as biometric keystroke signatures, vision and sound models, gaze tracking, and language models to detect LLM-generated answers.

Key Responsibilities

• Join a collaborative team of backend and AI research engineers.

• Contribute to the development and fine-tuning of large-scale neural networks, focusing on agentic AI.

• Align agentic model outputs with company objectives by collaborating cross-functionally.

• Stay current with advancements in ML, LLMs, and agent technologies.

• Mentor team members and foster professional growth.

• Deliver high-quality, scalable, and efficient ML solutions.

Required Qualifications

• Proven experience as an AI research engineer (e.g., LLMs, computer vision, related fields).

• Strong background in training and fine-tuning large neural networks.

• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field focused on ML/AI.

• Excellent leadership and communication skills.

• Deep understanding of ML concepts, frameworks, and best practices.
