Job Description

Microsoft Research’s AI Frontiers Lab is seeking a Senior Researcher to advance Generative AI and Multimodal Model (MLM) technologies. You will contribute to innovations in foundation models, agentic AI systems, and multimodal reasoning, with a direct impact on cutting-edge products and services worldwide.
Research areas include small language models (e.g., Phi, Orca), agent orchestration frameworks (e.g., AutoGen, MagenticOne, OmniParser), and action models for task automation. MSR offers an open publication policy, strong academic partnerships, and opportunities to solve real-world AI challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct high-impact research in Generative AI and Multimodal Model architectures.
Develop new methods for multimodal reasoning and training.
Innovate in automated orchestration for multi-agent systems, incorporating human feedback.
Work on evaluation and understanding of model and agent capabilities.
Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and product teams to bring ideas into Microsoft products.
Publish research in top-tier AI/ML conferences and journals.

Required Qualifications

Doctorate (or currently pursuing) in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
Proven expertise in Computer Vision and related AI fields.
Strong research track record with publications at top conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, CVPR, ICCV, EMNLP).

Preferred Qualifications

Doctorate + 2+ years relevant research experience.
Lead-author publications in AI/ML research.
Experience defining original research agendas.
Ability to collaborate across disciplines and communicate effectively.
Strong interest in real-world applications and societal impact.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range:
- U.S.: $119,800 – $234,700/year
- SF Bay Area & NYC: $158,400 – $258,000/year
